A Reflection on Faith, Truth, and Division.
I completely understand the anger, exhaustion, and deep hurt so many of us are carrying right now. Watching the deepening political division in our country is heartbreaking. But as we navigate these heavy emotions, we have to speak truth with clarity and conscience: what is happening under the banner of Christian support for Donald Trump is not what Jesus stood for.
Jesus did not preach the pursuit of worldly power, the demonization of adversaries, or the exploitation of fear. He called us to peacemaking, radical honesty, humility, and protection of the vulnerable. Echoing the earliest followers of Jesus—who were known simply as belonging to “The Way”—a truthful, compassionate, and spiritually grounded life calls us all to name this disconnect plainly. When Christian identity is merged with a political movement that relies on falsehoods and resentment, it distorts the core of the faith.
At the same time, when we bring history and empathy into conversation with public life, we must look at those caught up in this movement—who are often our own parents, siblings, neighbors, and lifelong friends—with spiritual discernment. They have been deeply manipulated. Leaders exploit everyday, real-world anxieties to enrich the privileged, tricking people into supporting policies that actively work against their own well-being and the well-being of their communities.
Recognizing this deception does not mean we tolerate the harm being done, but it does mean we must guard our own spirits. If we respond with hatred and contempt, we fall into the exact same trap. Isolating ourselves or resorting to name-calling may feel like self-defense, but it ultimately deepens the divide. What those caught in this deception need from us is a firm stance for truth paired with an unwavering commitment to love.
When Jesus taught us to turn the other cheek, he was not calling for passive submission; he was demonstrating the spiritual strength required to refuse hatred. Even when confronted with hostility, refusing to hate is how we ensure that darkness does not win.
Let us stand firmly against injustice and manipulation while continuing to hold every person in the Light. They may be unable to see the path right now, but by refusing to abandon the transformative path of truth and compassion, we ensure that we stay on it.
